My pots are made out of terra cotta, the most common (and beautiful!) clay in the world. Terra cotta is an earthenware clay, meaning it is still somewhat porous after being fired. I apply a layer of shiny clay called terra sigillata (literally earth seal) to the bottom of each pot to seal and protect it, and fire the pots in the kiln as hot as they can bear it for durability. However hand washing is best for these pieces since they will absorb excess water in the dishwasher cycle. Use the microwave with caution.
The maiolica base glaze is food safe.
I hope you enjoy using my pots as much I enjoyed making them!
